Understanding the system

What is a system boiler?

A system boiler provides central heating and heats water stored in a separate hot-water cylinder. Many of the main heating components, such as the pump and expansion vessel, are built into the boiler, helping create a neater system than a traditional open-vent arrangement.

Because hot water is stored in a cylinder, a correctly designed system can support several taps or showers more effectively than an on-demand combi setup. The boiler output, cylinder capacity and system design must still be matched to the household.

Property suitability

Who may system boilers suit?

These are general indicators. Final suitability depends on the existing system, heat loss, hot-water needs and installation assessment.

1

Homes with multiple bathrooms

Properties where more than one tap or shower may be used at the same time.

2

Higher hot-water demand

Larger households that benefit from storing hot water ready for use.

3

Properties with cylinder space

Homes with a suitable airing cupboard or other location for a hot-water cylinder.

4

Existing system-boiler setups

Like-for-like replacement may reduce unnecessary changes, subject to assessment.

Important: Cylinder capacity, recovery time, water pressure, radiator count and simultaneous hot-water use all affect suitability.
Balanced buying guidance

System Boilers advantages and limitations

Presenting both sides helps customers make a better-informed enquiry instead of choosing from price or output alone.

Potential advantages

  • Stored hot water can support several outlets at the same time.
  • A feed-and-expansion tank is not normally required with a sealed system.
  • Many heating components are built into the boiler casing.
  • Can suit larger households with higher hot-water requirements.
  • A cylinder can support future low-carbon or solar-water-heating considerations, subject to design.

Points to consider

  • Requires space for a separate hot-water cylinder.
  • Stored hot water can run out and needs time to reheat.
  • Heat can be lost gradually from the cylinder.
  • Installation cost may include cylinder or system work.
  • Boiler output and cylinder size must be selected together.

Common questions

System Boilers FAQs

What is the difference between a system and combi boiler?

A system boiler stores hot water in a separate cylinder, while a combi normally heats hot water on demand without a cylinder.

Is a system boiler suitable for two bathrooms?

It can be a strong option for homes with more than one bathroom, but the cylinder size, boiler output and expected simultaneous use must be assessed.

Does a system boiler need a water tank in the loft?

A sealed system normally does not need a feed-and-expansion tank in the loft, although the exact cylinder and system arrangement should be confirmed.

Can I replace a regular boiler with a system boiler?

A conversion may be possible, but pipework, water pressure, cylinder type and controls need to be reviewed before quoting.

What can affect a system boiler quotation?

The final quotation depends on the selected boiler, the condition and capacity of the hot-water cylinder, controls, pipework, system cleaning and any additional installation work identified during assessment.

How do I request a system boiler quote?

Choose a listed model or select Help Me Choose. The quote form will preserve System as the selected boiler type.
